Splitting Derived Parts by Input and by Value
When visualizing or reporting you may want to understand the contributions of an individual part that intersects with a derived part. Alternatively, you may want to analyze the values of individual sub-parts of a derived part. To do this, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ lets you split a derived part.
This action, though widely available in the derived parts user interface, is designed to split certain types of derived parts: section derived parts (such as the plane section, cylinder section, and sphere section), threshold, isosurface, and streamlines. Examples of use cases include:
- Turbomachinery models are usually made of multiple rows of blades. Some analysis of the simulation results needs to be performed on a per-blade basis.
- In a battery design case, you may want to plot the evolution of certain quantities across the thickness of the negative coating, separator, and positive coating.
Any of the objects that are created by the splitting actions can be post-processed in a report, a plot, or a scene. In addition, this splitting allows you to post-process with greater flexibility, for example a multi-valued monitor of a report that uses a particular derived part, or a multi-valued plot of a monitor of that derived part.
To split a derived part, use the following techniques:
Action | Instructions |
---|---|
Create a derived part of the same kind as the parent for each input part |
Right-click the derived part node and select one of the two following options, depending on the types of inputs of the derived part. A new group node appears in the object tree within the Derived Parts node in which all the new derived parts are grouped.
|
Create a derived part based on each section of a multi-section implicit part (such as a plane or a sphere) |
Right-click the derived part node and select Split by Section. A new group node appears in the object tree within the Derived Parts node in which all the new derived parts are grouped. The group node is named by suffixing Split by Section Subset to the name of the parent derived part. |
Create a derived part based on each isovalue of a multi-value isosurface |
Right-click the derived part node and select Split by Isovalue. A new group node appears in the object tree within the Derived Parts node in which all the new derived parts are grouped. The group node is named by suffixing Split by Isovalue Subset to the name of the parent derived part. |
