Defining Criteria for Adaptive Mesh Refinement

For the Adaptive Mesh model, you specify the initial base mesh as a trimmed (hex) mesh. You then define two refinement criteria: a free surface mesh refinement, for refinement at the air-water surface, and overset mesh refinement, for refinement around the overset hull boundary. As you specify a refinement level of 2, the refined cells will be a quarter of their initial size.

  1. Select the Physics 1 > Models > Adaptive Mesh node and set Initial Mesh to Trimmed (HEX)
  2. Right-click the Adaptive Mesh > Adaptive Mesh Criteria node and select New > Free Surface Mesh Refinement.
The mesh in hull region is sufficiently fine. The mesh in the domain is initially meshed coarse. You adapt the mesh of the domain according to current position of the hull. The Adaptive Mesh model should not refine the hull region:
  1. Select the Hull > Physics Conditions > Adaptation Optionnode and deactivate Enable Adaptation.
To define the Overset Mesh Refinement critierion:
  1. Right-click the Continua > Physics 1 > Adaptive Mesh > Adaptive Mesh Criteria node and select New > Overset Mesh Refinement.
