Assigning the Geometry Parts to a Surface Region

You assign the imported geometry parts to a surface region. You create a single wall boundary within this region, that represents the surfaces of the gear housing, gear, pinion, and injector.

SPH is a meshfree Lagrangian method that does not require a closed volume topology constrained by surfaces to define the flow domain. SPH discretizes the fluid itself as a cloud of interacting particles. Therefore, you require surfaces only to define boundary conditions.
To assign the geometry parts to a surface region:
  1. Multi-select the Geometry > Parts > housing, gear, pinion, and injector nodes, right-click one of the selected nodes, and select Assign Parts to Regions....
  2. In the Assign Parts to Regions dialog:
    1. Set the following options:
      • Create One Boundary for All Part Surfaces
      • Surface Topology
    2. Click Apply, then Close.
  3. Expand the Regions node.
The following surface region and boundary are created:
    • Region
    • Boundaries
    • Boundary
  4. Rename the Region node to gearbox and the Boundary node to wall.
  5. Save the simulation.
