Responses Reference

The following properties and right-click actions are available for responses.

Responses Properties

Not available for CAD Robustness studies.

Response
Sets the reports from the reference simulation to use as responses for the design study. See Study Outputs—Responses.

[response] Properties

Reference Report (read only)
Displays the associated report in the reference simulation.
Is Objective (only for Optimization and Sweep studies)
When On, instructs Design Manager to use the response as an objective for the design study.

Activating this property activates the Objective Properties child node with the following properties.

Objective Properties Properties
Goal
Sets the analysis goal for the selected response. You can choose to Minimize or Maximize the value of the response.
The specified goal sets the S i g n i in the performance evaluation of each design (see Eqn. (547)). The value is -1 for objectives being minimized and +1 for objectives being maximized.
Normalization Type
Sets the type of normalization to use for the selected response. The specified value determines the normalization value N o r m i in the performance evaluation of each design (see Eqn. (547)).
  • Baseline Normalization: Sets the normalization value automatically to the objective's value in the baseline design. The baseline design is the first design that Design Manager runs in the design study. For the various study types, this design is determined as follows:
    • Manual: The first design that you specify in the list of designs to run.
    • Sweep/DOE: The design that combines the minimum values for all of your input parameters.
    • Optimization/Stochastic: The design that combines the values that you set as Baseline Value for each input parameter.
  • Normalization Value: Allows you to specify the normalization in the Normalization Value child node. Only use this property if there are multiple objectives. Set this property so that all normalized objectives are of a similar order of magnitude.
Weight
Allows you to take into account the difference in importance between objectives. For example, the mass of a cooling device can be of less importance than its cooling rate.
The specified value determines the linear weight of the objective L i n W t i in the performance evaluation of each design (see Eqn. (547)).
Is Constraint (not for DOE studies)
When On, instructs Design Manager to use the response as a constraint for the design study.

Activating this property activates the Constraint Properties child node with the following properties.

Constraint Properties Properties
Type
Sets the type of the constraint. You can set a Minimum or a Maximum constraint for the response. You can also combine both limits (Minimum/Maximum). Any designs with a response value outside of the range that you specify in the corresponding child node is classed as infeasible. You specify the constraint values in the corresponding child nodes.
Units
Displays the unit of the selected response.
Lock Name
When On, preserves the name of the selected response.
When Off, the name of the response is linked to the name of the associated report from the reference simulation. When you change the name of the report in the reference simulation and update the reference simulation in Design Manager, the response name is updated automatically.
Tags
Specifies the tags for the response. For more information, see Tagging Simulation Objects.
Specify Valid Minimum
When On, allows you to set a valid minimum for the response value. A design with a response value below the value that you specify in the corresponding Valid Minimum child node is classed as Error design.
Specify Valid Maximum
When On, allows you to set a valid maximum for the response value. A design with a response value above the value that you specify in the corresponding Valid Maximum child node is classed as Error design.
In Simcenter STAR-CCM+ 12.04, the Is Objective and Is Constraint properties were supported for all study types. From version 12.06 onwards, if you play a macro recorded in version 12.04 that activates one of these properties for an unsupported study type, the property is activated as read-only but no longer used.

Responses Right-Click Actions

Create User Response
Allows you to create a response as a function of existing response values using an expression.

You can define the expression and dimensions for the user response using the properties of the corresponding Responses > [user response] node:

Expression
Defines the expression of the user response.

You can either type the expression directly, or use the expression editor. To access the expression editor, click . In the expression, you can only use existing study responses as variables. See 使用表达式编辑器.

Dimensions
Specifies the physical dimension of the user response.

[response] Right-Click Actions

Create Plot
Creates one of the following plot types for this response:
Create Surrogate
Creates a new surrogate model for this response with the selected surrogate type from:
Relink Response...
Allows you to set the selected response to another report from the reference simulation. This option is particularly useful if changes in the reference simulation break the link to the associated report.
Set New Tag...
Creates a new tag and adds it to the selected response. For more information, see Tagging Simulation Objects.
Set Tags > [tag]
Allows you to set a new tag or a previously created tag to the selected response.
