Pareto Optimization: Static Mixer

One of the study types that Design Manager supports is the multiple-objective tradeoff optimization, also called Pareto optimization. In this type of study, the optimal design is not unique, but a set of designs, which are expressed through a Pareto front. Design Manager searches for the combination of inputs that gives the best overall result among competing objectives.

This tutorial requires a Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Intelligent Design Exploration license in order to run the optimization study. You do not require a Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Intelligent Design Exploration license to set up or post-process a Design Manager project.

For this tutorial, a mixture of Oxygen and Nitrogen is passing through a static mixer. The aim of the optimization is to make the mixture as homogeneous as possible at the outlet, as well as minimizing the pressure drop across the pipe.

Design Manager can change the following parameters on the geometry:
  • The number of fins
  • The width of the fins
  • The length of the fins
  • The depth of the fins
  • The angle of the fins with respect to the centerline through the pipe
