Simulation Guide

The simulation guide is a single embedded document that you can edit within a simulation file. This document can contain formatted text, tables, images, and hyperlinks to nodes in the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ object tree or external web resources.

Although the simulation guide is intended for general purpose use, it is especially useful for template simulation files. Because the document is embedded within the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ simulation, template file users can readily see guidance information on how to use the template. When you create a simulation file from a template that includes a simulation guide, the simulation guide opens automatically in the new simulation file. (For more information about template simulation files, see Template Simulation Files.) No programming knowledge is required for modifying this content.

  1. To begin, select File > Simulation Guide.
  2. In the new window that appears, begin creating your instructions. When more than one simulation is open, the tab includes the name of the corresponding simulation. If needed, click (Toggle edit mode) to access the toolbar.

Most of the controls resemble those found in common word-processing applications, such as font, text color, and other formatting. You can copy and paste text directly from word-processing programs such as Microsoft Word, and retain basic formatting such as bulleted points, bold/italic, and text color (but not font selection). You can also insert images, hyperlinks, and links to objects in the simulation tree.

Any hyperlink in a simulation guide uses the default browser when clicked (or <Ctrl><Click> if in edit mode).

If you want to refer to a particular node in the simulation tree, for example a region or boundary node, you can create a direct link in your text.
  1. To add a link to an object in the tree, copy and paste its node, or drag and drop it, into the simulation guide window.

  2. To use the simulation guide (including hyperlinks), deactivate edit mode by clicking (Toggle edit mode) again.
When you click a link to a node in the object tree, that node has the focus and its properties are displayed.
  3. The content of your simulation guide is saved when you save the simulation.
  4. You can export the content of your simulation guide to a PDF file, or print it on a printer, using either of the following techniques:
    • Click (Print).
    • Right-click in the simulation guide window and select Print.
For best results with the PDF export, you are advised to use the system dialog for printing:
    1. In the right-hand sidebar, click More settings.
    2. At the bottom of the sidebar, click Print using system dialog.

The Print functionality is available whether or not the simulation guide is in edit mode.
